Texas Contact Lens Institute is a referral-tier specialty clinic in Plano, Texas, designing custom contact lenses for eyes that standard glasses and off-the-shelf contacts cannot correct. We see conditions such as Keratoconus, irregular and scarred corneas, post-surgical, post-corneal transplant eyes, severe dry eye and ocular surface disease. We also manage progressive myopia in children.
Every fitting is performed personally by Dr. Beth Summers, OD, MS, FAAO, FSLS, a fellowship-credentialed specialty lens optometrist.
When Standard Correction Stops Working
Many patients who come here have already been through it. Glasses prescriptions that do not correct the vision or provide stable vision. Soft lenses that blur, shift, or will not stay in position. Some have been told outright that nothing more can be done to fix their dry eye or corneal condition.
The underlying problem is often the same. Standard lenses are built for predictable, spherical corneas. When a cornea is steep, asymmetrical, scarred, or surgically altered, off-the-shelf lens cannot conform to it accurately — a soft lens simply drapes over the distortion without correcting the irregular shape of the cornea.
Custom specialty lenses solve this differently. They bypass the irregular surface entirely and replace it with a smooth one, engineered to the micron-level measurements of your specific eye.
Custom scleral lenses
Large-diameter lenses that vault completely over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye, holding a continuous reservoir of preservative-free saline against the ocular surface. The primary design for keratoconus, corneal scarring, post-surgical eyes, and severe dry eye.

Fellowship-Credentialed Care
Specialty lens outcomes depend almost entirely on the diagnostics, the design process, and the clinical judgment of the fitting optometrist. Dr. Summers practices in this one area exclusively.
She earned her Doctor of Optometry at SUNY College of Optometry with Beta Sigma Kappa honors, alongside a Master of Science in Vision Science, and was selected as a National Eye Institute T35 Clinical Research Fellow funded by the NIH. She holds fellowships in both the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) and the Scleral Lens Education Society (FSLS) — the latter awarded specifically for advanced expertise in scleral lens design.
She has published articles and lectures as a continuing education speaker.
How the Process Works
01 — Advanced diagnostic imaging
Corneal topography and ocular surface analysis map the three-dimensional shape of your eye — its curvature, elevation, asymmetry, and surface health — in detail a standard refraction cannot capture.
02 — Custom lens engineering
Using that dataset and, in most cases, a trial lens fitting, your lens is designed to the exact micron measurements of your eye. Every parameter is set for your cornea, not selected from a chart.
03 — Co-managed care and follow-up
Periodic visits monitor corneal health, fit stability, and vision over time. Routine exams stay with your primary eye care provider.
What This Practice Does Not Do
Being clear about the limits is part of how this practice works.
No routine eye examinations. You continue seeing your regular eye doctor for annual exams and general eye health.
No optical dispensary. This practice does not sell eyeglasses.
No surgery. Corneal cross-linking, transplantation, and refractive procedures are referred to cornea specialists and co-managed from there.
No direct insurance billing. Texas Contact Lens Institute is an out-of-network provider. A complete medical superbill is provided on request after your fitting for independent submission to your insurer.
No walk-ins. Appointments only.
For Referring Optometrists and Ophthalmologists
Patients are seen strictly for the specialty lens evaluation or anterior segment condition you request, then directed back to your practice for all primary eye care, annual examinations, and ongoing monitoring.
There is no optical dispensary and no eyeglass sales at Texas Contact Lens Institute. Clinical updates are sent to your office after the initial consultation, the diagnostic fitting, and final lens dispensing.
Your patients come back to you. We make sure they come back seeing clearly.

This is a specialty referral clinic, not a general practice. It does not perform routine eye examinations and does not sell eyeglasses. Every case involves a cornea or ocular surface that standard correction has not been able to address, and every fitting is performed personally by Dr. Summers rather than delegated to support staff.

No. Many patients arrive on referral from an optometrist, ophthalmologist, or cornea surgeon, and the practice operates within a co-management model. But a referral is not required to book. If you have prior corneal topography, surgical records, or contact lens fitting notes, bring them.

The practice is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. A complete medical superbill is provided on request after your fitting is complete, which you submit independently to your insurer. Many plans with out-of-network benefits reimburse a portion of medically necessary specialty lenses, particularly for diagnoses such as keratoconus or corneal transplant.

Often it is not. That conclusion is usually reached after standard soft lenses failed, which is expected on an irregular cornea. Custom scleral, RGP, hybrid, and piggyback systems are designed around your specific corneal topography and frequently succeed where mass-produced lenses could not.
